Melange Sweater Baby is worked from the top down. First, the back yoke is worked back and forth in stockinette stitch. Then, each shoulder is worked separately and joined to form the front yoke. Front and back yoke are then joined to form the body, which is worked in the round on a circular needle. Melange Sweater Baby is designed to have approx. 17 cm [6¾ inches] of positive ease, meaning it is designed to be approx. 17 cm [6¾ inches] larger in circumference than the chest measurement. The sizes 3-6 (6-9) 9-12 (12-18) months are designed to fit a chest circumference of approx. 45 (47) 49 (51) cm [17¾ (18½) 19¼ (20) inches]. The measurements for the finished garment are listed on the front page of the pattern (please note that these measurements are only achieved if the sweater is knitted in the correct gauge). If you/the recipient measures 47 cm [18½ inches] around the chest, you should knit a size 6-9 months. Size 6-9 months has a chest circumference of 64 cm [25¼ inches] which will, in this example, give 17 cm [6¾ inches] of positive ease. If the measured chest circumference deviates from the age guide, you can adjust the lengths to the person you’re knitting for. The same applies if the child is short/taller than average.
